Give every character a voice without hiring voice actors.

VoicePips creates the short chiptune voices that pixel-art characters speak with, the babble you know from classic RPGs and cozy life sims. Type a line of dialogue, pick a mood, and hear your character say it. Export the audio with timing data that makes your game's text type along in sync.

Write dialogue, hear it right away

  • Type a line and press Space. Every syllable becomes a pip shaped by its vowels and consonants, so lines sound like speech without any real words.
  • Punctuation shapes the delivery. Commas pause, questions rise, and a trailing "..." slows down.
  • Stretch a word by typing it the way it sounds: "goood", "sooo", "hmmm".

Moods that change mid-sentence

  • Give each character moods such as angry, scared or tired, and switch between them inside a line: I'm fine. [angry]I said I'm FINE!
  • Fade from one mood to another over any length of time, or snap instantly when something happens.
  • Mix moods on the timeline. Each mood has its own lane, and you can blend as many as you like, for example 60% sad and 40% scared.

Design any voice

  • Start from presets for adults, children, the elderly, creatures, robots and narrators.
  • Shape the voice with pitch, speed, envelope and a vowel chart you drag by hand.
  • Switch a voice to NES or Game Boy mode to limit it to what that console could play, or add bitcrush for extra crunch.
  • Choose babble for speech-like voices or blips for a classic beep per letter.

Built for game developers

  • Export single lines, a whole character, a scene or the entire project as WAV or OGG.
  • voicepips.json describes every file: the display text, when each character should appear, and when moods change. Reference code for Godot, Unity and JavaScript is included.
  • Voice banks give you short single pips per character and mood, for games that play a pip for each typed letter.
  • Import your existing dialogue from Yarn Spinner, ink, Dialogic, CSV or JSON. Speakers become characters and nodes become scenes.
  • Portraits for each character and mood are shown in the preview dialogue box and exported with your audio.

Made to be fast

  • Keyboard shortcuts for everything, shown right on the buttons.
  • A two-minute interactive tour and short lessons get you started.
  • Undo and redo for every change.
  • Projects are readable JSON files that work well with version control.
  • Works fully offline.

Free demo

The demo is the full app with two limits: each export covers one character, and every exported file ends with a short chirp. The voicepips.json manifest and voice banks are in the full version. Your projects open in the full version without any changes.

Use the audio anywhere

Everything you create with VoicePips is yours. Use it in any project, including commercial games, with no royalties and no credit required.

System requirements

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
  • Linux, 64-bit (x86_64)
  • A graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.3

Questions

Does VoicePips need an internet connection?
No. It works offline and never sends your projects anywhere.

Which game engines does it work with?
Any engine that plays WAV or OGG files. The voicepips.json manifest is plain JSON, and reference code for Godot, Unity and JavaScript shows how to type text in sync with the audio.

Do I have to learn a tag language?
No. You can do everything on the timeline: click a mood lane to change the mood, drag to blend, and drag a syllable to bend or stretch it. The tags are there when you want to type quickly.

Can I sell games that use these voices?
Yes. The audio you make is yours, including for commercial games.

Why does Windows warn me the first time I open it?
VoicePips is not signed with a paid certificate yet, so Windows SmartScreen asks you to confirm once. Click More info, then Run anyway.

Is there a Mac version?
Not yet. A macOS version is planned and will be a free update.

Will there be updates?
Yes. Updates to the version you buy are free.
